The cerebral cortex is the outermost neural tissue of the cerebrum and cerebellum, and it is divided into left and right hemispheres. The cerebral cortex's main functions include memory, attention, awareness, thought, language, and consciousness. The cortex has six layers and is 2 to 4 millimeters thick. The cortex has many sub parts, including the thalamus, basal ganglia, and the olfactory bulb, which is in charge of scent. The cortex contains sensory areas which receive and processes information from the senses. The cortex also contains the primary and premotor cortexes.
