The Medulla and the Pons are both parts of the brain stem. They are located under the pituitary gland and in front of the Cerebellum.
The medulla is composed of two parts: the open part and the closed part. The Medulla controls autonomic, or involuntary, functions of the body such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion. It also controls the vomiting, cardiac, respiratory, and vasomotor centers. It connects the Spinal chord with the brain. It controls reflexes like sneezing, coughing, and swallowing as well.
The Pons is the region of the brain which connects the Thalamus and the Medulla. The Pons' main function is to move along signals from the spinal chord to the brain, but it also helps in inspiration and expiration, or breathing. The Pons is implicated with sleep paralysis, and it also has a role in generating dreams.
